Principles Over Party: Washington’s Warning and the Pledge of Allegiance | 11-06-26

Are political parties protecting liberty, or putting themselves between the people and their government? And when we pledge allegiance, do we understand what we’re promising?

On this episode of Liberty Roundtable, Sam Bushman welcomes Dr. Scott Bradley and Liberty United founder Jacob Oaks for a discussion about political factions, concentrated power, and the importance of putting principles above party loyalty.

Drawing on George Washington’s Farewell Address and writings by Noah Webster, they debate party privilege, access for independent and third-party candidates, and whether decentralizing political power can help restore representative government. Sam also lays out his case for neighborhood-level caucuses and candidate vetting without partisan gatekeeping.

The conversation then turns to the Pledge of Allegiance. The guests discuss its history, the difference between understanding and simply reciting its words, and their differing views on allegiance to God, country, and a constitutional republic.

A conversation about faith, informed citizenship, and the danger of allowing political loyalty to replace personal conviction.
